An option is the right, but not the obligation, to buy (call) or sell (put) the underlying asset, such as a stock.

Whether it is a call or a put, the option identifies the underlying asset, which for the following example with be Acme stock. It has a strike price, sometimes referred to as exercise price, and an expiration date.
